Volunteers live with a local host family and are accommodated in a dorm-style volunteer house in Ghana and you can expect to share a room with 1-4 other volunteers. Rooms are typically separated by gender, though we cannot always guarantee this because of varied occupancy and booking circumstances.
Living is basic, but comfortable and bathrooms are shared, consisting of western showers and toilets. Bedding is provided, but volunteers are asked to bring their own towels. Volunteers need to be prepared for times where there may be no electricity as the supply can sometimes be disrupted in Ghana.
The accommodation can host 10 to 15 volunteers at a time. Program is year-round with flexible start dates and duration.
Volunteers are provided with three meals per day, featuring mostly local dishes. Breakfast typically includes bread, eggs, fruit, oats, peanut butter, jam, and honey, along with coffee and creamer. These items are available in the kitchen each morning, where volunteers can help themselves.
Lunch typically consist of boiled yam with egg sauce, jollof rice with chicken, rice balls and peanut soup, banku and tilapia etc.
Dinner typically consists of plain rice and sauce, cassava, plantains, legumes such as beans, pasta, and french fries with meat or vegetables (typically carrot, sweet potatoes, peas, etc)
The meal plan aims to promote sustainable practices and healthy nutrition by using more plant-based foods. Volunteers can typically expect two meat dishes and three fish dishes per week. Please note, meals can vary depending on seasonality.
Please note that while the local team can cater for vegetarians, they are not able to cater to other special dietary requirement.
Volunteers have free time and are able to make the most of the gorgeous beaches, explore Ghana's historic castles and forts and other towns and villages, shop for souvenirs at the supermarkets,, or enjoy a range of adventure and outdoor activities including diving, swimming, wildlife viewing, and fishing. Volunteers can also hang around with other volunteers at the accommodation, read books, watch television or help your host mother with meal preparations while directly enabling you experience the rich culture of Ghana.
