Macaw Recovery Network (MRN) is a Costa Rican nonprofit working to protect and recover wild macaw populations through conservation breeding, release programs, habitat conservation, and community engagement. Our breeding centre is located in Islita, a small coastal community beside Costa Rica’s tropical dry forest. Here, our team cares for rescued macaws and other parrots and supports their recovery and conservation. Volunteers contribute to the birds’ daily care by preparing food, feeding them, cleaning aviaries, and assisting with other activities at the centre. Their tasks vary according to the needs of the birds and the ongoing projects. Volunteering with us is also an opportunity to experience life in a rural Costa Rican community and learn about the care of parrots and the challenges of wildlife conservation. A Love Story That Inspired DAKTARI Ian and Michèle Merrifield officially opened DAKTARI Bush School in 2006, after years of dedication and hard work. They first met while Ian was working as a game ranger at Tshukudu Game Lodge and Michèle was volunteering there. While caring for injured zebras, wildebeest, and warthogs, they fell in love and shared a vision of protecting wildlife through education. DAKTARI’s mission is to educate and inspire local children to value their environment while supporting community development. Located in the South African bush near Kruger National Park, DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage is a local NGO founded in 2006. The organization provides environmental education programs where children stay at DAKTARI for five days to learn about wildlife conservation and their natural heritage. Children also help care for animals that cannot be released back into the wild, helping develop empathy, respect, and responsibility toward wildlife. Volunteers from around the world support the program by teaching lessons and helping guide children in animal care activities. In addition, DAKTARI runs an Outreach Program, including weekly ECO Clubs and Wildlife Crime Campaigns, to inspire positive attitudes toward environmental conservation within local communities.

Our Childcare and Teaching Program in Bali offers volunteers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on local communities while experiencing authentic Balinese culture. The program supports local kindergartens and community schools where resources are often limited and additional support is highly valued. Volunteers assist local teachers with basic English lessons, creative activities, games, arts and crafts, and general classroom support. Every year, we rescue more than 700 animals, release as many as possible back into the wild, and educate over 1,000 visitors. We are the only wildlife rescue center serving three major conservation areas that together protect 19.7% of Costa Rica’s territory. Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary began in 2014 as a small rescue project responding to the increasing number of animals affected by human development in the region. What started with only a few enclosures and a small team has grown into a fully equipped sanctuary with a veterinary clinic, nursery, research programs, and year-round internship and volunteer opportunities. Marine Conservation Philippines (MCP) is a non-government organisation based in Negros Oriental, working to protect and restore the country's marine and coastal ecosystems. Oceans around the world face increasing threats from plastic pollution, habitat destruction, unsustainable fishing practices, and climate change. These pressures place immense strain on marine biodiversity and the communities that depend on healthy oceans for their livelihoods. The Philippines occupies a globally significant position within the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse marine regions on Earth. With more than 7,000 islands and an extensive coastline, the country supports an extraordinary variety of coral reefs, mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and marine wildlife. These ecosystems provide food, income, and coastal protection for millions of people, but many are under increasing pressure from human activity and environmental change. At MCP, we envision a future where thriving coral reefs, healthy fish populations, sea turtles, and other marine species continue to flourish alongside sustainable coastal communities. Achieving this vision requires a combination of scientific research, environmental education, habitat restoration, and community engagement. Our organisation works to conserve marine and coastal habitats while supporting local communities through education, capacity building, and sustainable resource management initiatives. International volunteers play an important role in our programs, working alongside marine biologists, conservation scientists, educators, and dive professionals to contribute to meaningful conservation projects. All of our activities take place underwater and involve regular scuba diving. Previous diving experience is not required, as participants can receive scuba training and certification as part of their placement, allowing them to safely contribute to marine conservation and scientific monitoring projects.
Our NGO empowers and inspires communities through holistic education. We provide English, IT, and life skills courses to disadvantaged youth in Cambodia while also developing soft skills such as self-confidence, leadership, citizenship, and social responsibility. Students are encouraged to apply their learning in real-life situations. To support our schools financially, we have established an administrative arm that manages three accommodation facilities in Kampot: a boutique hotel, a bungalow park, and a residence/guesthouse. Profits from these businesses directly fund our educational programs across the country. This partnership between our NGO and business group allows us to combine quality hospitality services with meaningful social impact. RisingSun Volunteers is an NGO based in Teshie Nungua, a community in Accra. The founders of this NGO have been working with volunteer organisations for many years and reside all over the world, including Germany, Denmark, the UK, and of course, locally in Ghana. Having accumulated extensive experience through years of travel and collaboration with interns and volunteers, we bring valuable insights to the establishment of our own volunteer organisation. The children in the projects we work with require a great deal of care, attention, and most importantly, companionship. Volunteers can organize extra activities such as: - Recreational activities (yoga, sports, arts, and crafts) - Helping children with homework - Playing, dancing, painting, and singing with the children - Assisting with day-to-day tasks at the institution - Building the self-esteem and confidence of the children Children aged 1 to 5 years attend our program, where the main goal is to teach basic skills such as colors, language, music, and numbers, while helping them grow in a safe, clean, and supportive environment where they feel loved, cared for, and strong. There are about 50 children attending our program. Their families often come from low-income households or broken families. Some of the children are orphans and are cared for by relatives. Balangoda Restoration Project: Volunteering for Rainforest Recovery in Sri Lanka The Balangoda Restoration Project, initiated by Rainforest Protectors in the foothills of the wet zone near Balangoda, offers an immersive, hands-on ecological restoration experience. Set within a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot, the initiative works to reverse decades of deforestation, land fragmentation, and unsustainable agriculture. Through practical regeneration methods—including planting native rainforest trees, assisted natural regeneration, soil and watershed restoration, agroforestry systems, and riverine habitat protection—the project restores ecological connectivity while improving water regulation, soil stability, and climate resilience. Volunteers actively contribute to every phase of the project based on season and need. Work includes seed collection, nursery maintenance, soil preparation and composting, native planting, plot maintenance, mapping, and monitoring restoration areas, offering deep practical insights into tropical forest ecology. The living experience is intentionally low-impact and immersed in nature. Volunteers stay in simple eco-structures, such as mud or bamboo houses surrounded by wildlife, and experience traditional rural Sri Lankan culture. This includes authentic home-cooked meals, local farming techniques, traditional ecological knowledge, and meaningful community interaction. To complement field labor, the experience balances hard work with recreation across the region’s rich landscape. Participants can swim in pristine local rivers, hike to hidden forest waterfalls, explore nature trails, visit nearby villages, spot wildlife, or embark on safaris in neighboring natural areas. We are community members hosting international volunteers since 1988. We have welcomed volunteers from 32 countries and provide clean, comfortable accommodation and traditional Indian home-cooked organic meals.
