About Us

Tanzania Health Opportunities (THO) is a registered non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental organization operating in Tanzania since November 2020. Registered under NGO Registration Number 00NGO/R/1506, THO was established to improve access to healthcare and promote the well-being of underserved communities through humanitarian action, volunteerism, health education, and community development.

THO works to address healthcare disparities by connecting communities with essential health services, empowering healthcare volunteers, and supporting local health systems. Through community medical outreaches, hospital-based volunteer placements, health education programs, and public health initiatives, we strive to improve health outcomes and create sustainable solutions to healthcare challenges.

Headquartered in Dar es Salaam, THO collaborates with healthcare facilities, local authorities, educational institutions, volunteers, and community leaders across Tanzania. Our programs provide valuable opportunities for both local and international volunteers to gain practical experience while making a meaningful contribution to community health.

Since its establishment, THO has reached thousands of individuals through free medical services, disease screening, health promotion activities, and healthcare support programs. We are committed to strengthening communities by improving access to quality healthcare, promoting disease prevention, encouraging cultural exchange, and supporting professional development.

Our vision is a healthier and more prosperous society where everyone has access to quality healthcare and opportunities to thrive. Through partnership, innovation, and service, THO continues to create a positive and lasting impact in communities throughout Tanzania.

Why choose us?

THO is unique because it combines hospital clinical placements with community medical outreaches, giving volunteers both hands-on learning and meaningful community impact.

Volunteers work alongside local healthcare professionals, gain insight into healthcare delivery in Tanzania, and contribute directly to improving access to healthcare in underserved communities.

We provide personalized support before arrival and throughout the program, ensuring a safe, rewarding, and culturally immersive experience.

By choosing THO, volunteers don’t just observe healthcare; they become part of the solution.

Requirements

Participants must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid passport with at least six months’ validity remaining, as well as an appropriate visa for entry into Tanzania.

Healthcare students and professionals should provide proof of enrollment, qualifications, or professional registration where applicable.

Volunteers must have adequate travel and health insurance, be physically and mentally fit to participate, and comply with THO policies and the code of conduct.

Recommended health requirements include routine vaccinations and any travel-related vaccinations advised by a healthcare provider, such as yellow fever (where applicable) and hepatitis vaccination.

Healthcare volunteers should have a genuine interest in global health, cultural exchange, and community service.

No specific dietary requirements are necessary, and we strive to accommodate reasonable dietary preferences whenever possible.

The program fee includes accommodation, airport pick-up, orientation, daily support from the THO team, placement coordination, and volunteer supervision. Meals are provided daily, with breakfast and dinner on weekdays and three meals per day on weekends and public holidays. Volunteers also receive assistance with settling in, local guidance, access to community outreach activities, and a certificate of participation upon successful completion of the program. ❌ Not included

The program fee does not include international or domestic flights, visa fees, travel and health insurance, vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis, personal expenses, local transportation outside program activities, laundry services, telephone and internet costs outside the accommodation, or sightseeing and tourism activities. Volunteers are responsible for arranging and covering these expenses before and during their stay.

A typical volunteer day begins with breakfast before heading to the hospital for clinical placements, usually from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday.

Volunteers work alongside local healthcare professionals, observe and assist within their scope of training, and gain exposure to various departments. Depending on the schedule, volunteers may also participate in community outreach activities, health education programs, and public health initiatives.

Evenings are free for relaxation, cultural activities, exploring the local community, or spending time with fellow volunteers.

Weekends may include community outreach events, cultural excursions, or personal travel and leisure activities.

Accommodation cost: €30 per day + €200 one-time program fee (includes accommodation logistics, volunteer support, placement fee, placement coordination, orientation, invitation letter, certification after completion, and airport pick-up).

Volunteers are accommodated in safe and comfortable local host families and the THO volunteer house in Dar es Salaam. We can host individual volunteers, couples, and groups.

Shared and private room options may be available depending on availability and the length of stay.

Accommodation includes furnished bedrooms, shared bathrooms, Wi-Fi access, electricity, running water, kitchen facilities, and common areas for relaxation and socializing.

Daily meals are provided, and laundry services can be arranged locally. The accommodation is located within reasonable distance of volunteer placements and is supervised by our local team, who are available to provide support throughout the program.

Airport pick-up and orientation are also included to help volunteers settle in comfortably upon arrival.

Volunteers are provided with daily meals throughout their stay as follows:

On weekdays, two meals (breakfast and dinner) are included, as volunteers are typically at their placements during lunchtime.

On weekends and public holidays, three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are provided. We aim to offer nutritious meals that reflect local cuisine, and reasonable dietary requirements, including vegetarian options, can be accommodated when communicated in advance.

During their free time, volunteers can explore the vibrant city of Dar es Salaam, relax on nearby beaches, visit local markets, museums, and cultural sites, or enjoy restaurants and cafés.

Weekends provide opportunities to visit Zanzibar Island, Mikumi National Park, Bagamoyo, or other tourist destinations in Tanzania.

Volunteers can also participate in cultural activities, sports, community events, and social gatherings with fellow volunteers and locals. These experiences offer a unique opportunity to learn about Tanzanian culture, build friendships, and make the most of their time in the country.
