About Us
United Tanzania was founded in 2021 as a Germany-based international NGO dedicated to mitigating human-hyena
conflict and promoting human-carnivore coexistence. Our team, led by a veterinarian and supported by local
trackers and camp staff, is committed to empowering local communities and conducting research on spotted and striped hyenas.
Our long-term goals include developing effective strategies for carnivore conservation and enhancing animal
health.

Our mission is to protect biodiversity and the ecosystem while preserving existing species and habitats. The first step is to identify the threats for wildlife species before sustainable conservation strategies, in collaboration with local communities, can be established.

1. Science-Led Field Research
Work under the direct guidance of a wildlife veterinarian. You will learn and apply rigorous methodology, including:
-GIS/Mapping: QGIS/ArcGIS spatial analysis.
-Population Monitoring: Clan-size, den-site, and density studies.
-Conflict Mitigation: Analyzing hotspots and conducting household data analysis.
-Conservation Medicine: Investigating the intersection of wildlife, livestock, and community health.
2. Active Conservation
Move beyond observation. You will be hands-on with snare detection, scat sampling, camera trapping, and profile compilation, generating vital data to protect the Lake Eyasi corridor.
3. Integrated "One Health"
Support our "Conservation That Pays" model. You will engage in community-led initiatives—from school scholarships to educational workshops—fostering long-term coexistence between people and carnivores.
Requirements
To join as a volunteer, you don't need previous experience, just a strong interest in wildlife conservation and the ability to live in the bush within an arid environment and its challenges.
Please understand that field operations can be subject to unforeseen circumstances like weather, logistical changes, or local conditions that are beyond the NGO's control and may affect daily activities.
If you have previous experience in similar projects, that's a plus and would be welcomed.
We welcome all people as volunteers aged 17 years and above.
Volunteer experience
Our work is highly flexible and dynamic; no two days are the same. Each schedule is adjusted daily to meet the specific requirements of our ongoing conservation projects and field conditions.
Example of a typical day:
Morning Fieldwork: Tracking, snare detection, and maintaining our camera trap network to gather essential population data.
Midday Research: Equipment maintenance, data entry, and GIS mapping back at camp during the hottest hours.
Afternoon Outreach: Community engagement, such as school workshops or household interviews, alongside clan-monitoring and photo-ID profile compilation.
Evening Planning: Reviewing the day’s findings and planning the next day’s mission.

You will be accommodated in comfortable safari tents equipped with a bed, closet, table, and chairs. Our bush camp offers a unique, authentic experience featuring:
We provide Safari tents in different sizes and can accomodate 12 volunteers at a time.
Amenities: Bath rooms are on suite. A bush shower under the African sky is available as well, the camp is run with reliable solar power, and offers satellite internet.
Dining: Three meals a day are served in our open-air kitchen or at the fireplace, where you can admire the sunset.
Full Service: Our dedicated camp staff handles all cleaning and laundry.
3 meals per day
After all Lake Eyasi is in close vicinity to all big National Parks in the Northern part of the country. We offer weekend trips with our project car, a 4-wheel drive Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, which is the perfect vehicle for a Safari-Trip. The
vehicle can carry 5 people + driver, has a fridge and VHS-radio on board.
The surrounding National Parks are
Serengeti,
Tarangire, and
Manyara National Park,
Lake Natron, and
Ngorongoro Crater,
all of them in between one and 5 Hours away.
