About Us
Hirwa Children’s Foundation is a community-based non-profit organization located in Kayonza District, Eastern Province of Rwanda. It was established to support vulnerable children and families by improving access to education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. Our work is based on community participation, local ownership, and long-term impact.
We run programs focused on children’s education support, adult literacy, health awareness, and economic empowerment for vulnerable families. Through close collaboration with community members, local leaders, and volunteers, we address daily challenges while promoting dignity, self-reliance, and social responsibility.
By welcoming volunteers from around the world, Hirwa Children’s Foundation promotes meaningful cultural exchange and shared learning. Volunteers contribute their skills while gaining a deeper understanding of rural life in Rwanda, helping communities move from hardship toward a more sustainable future.

Hirwa Children’s Foundation offers volunteers a genuine grassroots experience where their time and skills make a real difference. We work closely with the local community, allowing volunteers to actively participate in meaningful projects that support children, families, and community development.
Volunteers are welcomed as part of the community, not just visitors. This creates a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, learning, and mutual respect. Our projects are flexible and based on real community needs, ensuring that every contribution has a positive and lasting impact.
By choosing Hirwa Children’s Foundation, volunteers support an ethical, non-profit organization that values transparency, fairness, and collaboration. At the same time, volunteers gain practical experience, personal growth, and a deeper understanding of life and community work in rural Rwanda.
Requirements
Volunteers should be open-minded, respectful, and willing to engage with the local community. No specific professional qualifications are required, but a positive attitude, flexibility, and willingness to learn are essential.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and in good physical and mental health. Basic English communication skills are helpful. Previous experience in education, health, community work, or social development is an advantage but not mandatory.
Volunteers are expected to respect local culture, follow foundation guidelines, and contribute €15 per day. A genuine interest in cultural exchange and community service is highly valued.
Volunteer experience
A typical day at Hirwa Children’s Foundation begins with breakfast and a short planning meeting with the local team. Volunteers usually work for about 4–5 hours per day, depending on activities and community needs.
Daily tasks may include supporting children’s education activities, adult literacy sessions, community outreach, health awareness programs, or assisting with administrative and creative work. Volunteers work closely with local staff and community members in a supportive and respectful environment.
After activities, volunteers have free time to relax, explore the village, spend time with local families, or take part in cultural experiences. Evenings are often shared over meals, conversations, and community interaction.
€15 Euro Per Day
Volunteers are accommodated within the local community in simple, safe, and clean housing. The accommodation offers a genuine cultural experience and allows volunteers to live closely with community members and better understand daily life in rural Rwanda.
Basic facilities such as a bed, mosquito net, and shared bathroom are provided where available. Living conditions are modest, reflecting the local lifestyle, but comfortable enough for a meaningful and respectful stay. Please note that this is a rural area with no electricity; however, a flashlight can be provided.
This community-based accommodation encourages cultural exchange, shared learning, and strong connections between volunteers and local families.
Meals are prepared locally and reflect traditional Rwandan cuisine. Due to limited financial resources, volunteers are kindly requested to contribute €15 per day, similar to other volunteers hosted by the foundation.
Meals are simple, healthy, and prepared using locally available ingredients. This contribution helps ensure the sustainability of the program while allowing volunteers to share daily life and meals with the community.
During free time, volunteers can explore village life and enjoy cultural exchange with local community members. Activities may include visiting local markets, participating in traditional cooking, learning basic Kinyarwanda, storytelling, music and dance, and spending time with local families.
Volunteers can also enjoy nature walks, cycling, and community tours. The foundation is located close to Akagera National Park, offering opportunities to explore Rwanda’s wildlife and natural beauty during weekends or days off.
These activities allow volunteers to relax, connect with the community, and gain a deeper understanding of Rwandan culture and daily life.
