About Us
St. Dominic Health Care Services (SDHCS) is a community-based organization located in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, Uganda. Founded in 2012 and registered as a Community-Based Organization in 2014, SDHCS was established to respond to the healthcare challenges faced by vulnerable and underserved families in our community.
Our mission is to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to vulnerable communities, with a focus on maternal and child health, community health, disease prevention, and improved livelihoods. We believe that everyone deserves access to basic healthcare, dignity, and the opportunity to live a healthy life.
Over the years, SDHCS has grown through community participation, local partnerships, dedicated staff, volunteers, and supporters. Our work includes maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS prevention and support, family planning, sexual and reproductive health, immunization, nutrition, health education, community outreach, and support for vulnerable children, young people, and older people.
Our health facility provides services to families who may face financial and other barriers to accessing healthcare. We also take health education and other services into the community through outreach activities, helping people understand how they can prevent disease and improve their health.
We welcome volunteers who want to learn, share their skills, and contribute to meaningful community work. Depending on their interests and qualifications, volunteers can support health education, community outreach, children's and youth activities, elderly support, administration, communications, fundraising, and other appropriate activities.
At SDHCS, we value respect, teamwork, cultural exchange, learning, and service. We hope every volunteer will leave with a deeper understanding of community health in Uganda while knowing that their time and contribution have made a positive difference.
Program at a glance
Why choose us?
Choose St. Dominic Health Care Services for a genuine grassroots volunteer experience where you can learn, serve, and connect directly with a local community in Uganda.
Volunteers work alongside our staff and community members and can see how a local organization responds to real healthcare and social challenges. Depending on their skills and interests, volunteers can participate in community outreach, health education, children's and youth activities, elderly support, administration, communications, and other meaningful activities.
Our program is designed around cultural exchange, teamwork, and learning. Volunteers are welcomed as part of our team, not simply as visitors. They have an opportunity to experience everyday community life, learn about Ugandan culture, and contribute their knowledge, skills, and ideas.
We offer a simple, affordable community-based experience with accommodation and three meals per day for US$20 per volunteer per day, making it accessible to volunteers who want.
Requirements
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and should be responsible, respectful, willing to learn, and interested in community service.
No specific professional qualification is required for general volunteer activities. Applicants should provide information about their education, skills, previous experience, and areas of interest so that we can match them with suitable activities.
Volunteers participating in health-related activities must work under the guidance of SDHCS staff and only undertake activities appropriate to their qualifications, experience, and applicable Ugandan requirements. Volunteers must not provide independent medical or clinical care unless they are appropriately qualified and authorized.
Volunteers are responsible for meeting applicable Ugandan immigration, visa, travel insurance, and vaccination requirements for their nationality and length of stay.
All volunteers must respect local culture, confidentiality, safeguarding principles, and SDHCS policies.
Volunteer experience
A typical volunteer day begins with a simple orientation and planning with the SDHCS team. Depending on the volunteer's interests and skills, activities may include community health education, outreach activities, maternal and child health support, children's and youth activities, elderly support, administrative assistance, communications, or fundraising support.
Volunteers normally work alongside SDHCS staff and community members during agreed working hours. The schedule may vary depending on community activities and the volunteer's area of interest.
Volunteers also have free time to rest, explore the local community, learn about Ugandan culture, or participate in activities outside the program.
€125 per week
Volunteers stay in simple, safe and comfortable community-based accommodation arranged by SDHCS. We can host 1–5 volunteers at a time, depending on availability and the length of their stay.
The accommodation provides basic sleeping facilities, access to bathroom and toilet facilities, electricity, and a place for volunteers to rest and keep their personal belongings. Volunteers may share some common facilities and should be comfortable with a modest community-based living environment rather than hotel-style accommodation.
Accommodation is provided together with meals at a total cost of US$20 per volunteer per day. Specific arrangements, including room sharing, will be confirmed with volunteers before arrival.
Volunteers receive 3 basic meals per day as part of the US$20 daily fee. Meals are locally prepared and generally include common Ugandan foods such as rice, matoke, potatoes, beans, vegetables and other locally available foods. Volunteers should inform SDHCS in advance about any food allergies, dietary restrictions or special dietary requirements so that we can discuss suitable arrangements.
