For over 30 years, the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society (SLWCS) has worked to protect Sri Lanka’s extraordinary wildlife and natural landscapes while helping people and wildlife thrive together.
Our work is built on a simple belief: lasting conservation is only possible when local communities are part of the solution. Rather than focusing on wildlife in isolation, SLWCS places communities at the heart of its research and conservation efforts. We work to understand the challenges facing both people and wildlife, develop practical solutions to human-wildlife conflict, protect biodiversity, and create opportunities that benefit local communities.
Our mission is to help communities balance ecosystem protection with economic development by pioneering innovative and sustainable solutions for wildlife conservation. Through research, education, community engagement, and field-based initiatives, we strive to create a future where people and wildlife can coexist.
SLWCS programs provide tangible benefits to local communities, including employment opportunities and support for sustainable livelihoods. By involving local people directly in conservation, we encourage responsible stewardship of natural resources and strengthen the long-term sustainability of our work.
Volunteers and conservation enthusiasts from around the world also play an important role. By participating in meaningful fieldwork, they directly support our research, conservation, and community initiatives while gaining an immersive understanding of wildlife conservation in action.

Requirements
- No previous conservation or scientific experience is required
- Open to individuals, families, students, and active volunteers aged 50+
- A genuine interest in wildlife, nature, and conservation
- Comfortable working outdoors in a tropical, rural environment
- Reasonable fitness, flexibility, and adaptability for hands-on field activities
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn
- Respect for local communities, cultures, wildlife, and the environment
- Willingness to follow staff guidance and safety procedures
- Prepared to work in changing weather and field conditions
- Responsible participation in assigned conservation activities
- Most importantly, bring curiosity, enthusiasm, and a genuine commitment to conservation

Volunteer experience
Every day with SLWCS offers a new opportunity to experience conservation in action. Volunteers may begin with breakfast before heading into the field alongside SLWCS staff and researchers.
Depending on current project needs, activities may include:
- Observing wild elephants
- Monitoring wildlife and habitats
- Conducting biodiversity surveys
- Collecting field data
- Maintaining conservation projects
- Supporting community-based initiatives
After fieldwork, volunteers return to the field house for meals, rest, and time to record observations and share experiences. Some days may also include educational sessions, village visits, or other conservation activities.
Schedules vary depending on weather, wildlife movements, and research priorities, so flexibility is an important part of the experience. Evenings are generally free to relax, connect with fellow volunteers, and enjoy the surrounding landscape.
Each day combines discovery, learning, teamwork, and meaningful conservation work.
US$975 per person for 2 weeks
Volunteers stay at our field house near Wasgamuwa National Park, surrounded by the sights and sounds of rural Sri Lanka. The field house provides a comfortable and authentic base while keeping volunteers close to the wildlife, landscapes, and communities involved in our conservation work.
- Simple, gender-separated shared accommodation

The field house has a relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere, bringing together volunteers and staff from around the world who share a passion for conservation. As a working field location, facilities are comfortable but more basic than a hotel, creating an immersive experience close to nature and local communities.

Weekdays are dedicated to hands-on conservation activities, while weekends are free for volunteers to relax, explore, and experience more of Sri Lanka.
