Help a Community In Malawi

🏢 Hosted by Helping your community forum · 👤 Min age 18 years

About Us

Sex education and menstrual hygiene workshops are conducted to raise awareness on sexual health and menstrual care. Our previous work has trained local women to produce reusable sanitary pads, which were distributed to 672 girls in six schools. We aim to expand this project and welcome new ideas.

We also run initiatives to empower women through income generation. This includes providing soft loans to help women start small businesses, as well as training others to produce and sell traditional crafts such as jewelry, handbags, and shoes.

We welcome volunteers to support teaching in local schools, assisting with English and other subjects to improve education for children in the community.

Our medical health internship offers exposure to real healthcare settings in Malawi. Volunteers observe medical practice, support staff where possible, and learn about healthcare challenges in resource-limited environments. Placements are in government-approved hospitals and clinics, and require open-mindedness and adaptability.

Our law and human rights internship allows volunteers to work alongside legal professionals providing free legal aid. Activities include assisting with case preparation, supporting clients, observing court processes, and participating in community awareness on issues such as domestic violence, land disputes, and family law.

Volunteers will be hosted by the Chief Executive Officer in their family home, offering a unique opportunity to experience Malawian culture and connect with a local family. English is spoken fluently, ensuring easy communication. The house has 5 bedrooms, with volunteers staying in shared same-gender rooms equipped with air coolers. It is located in a safe area with a garden and secure fencing. Two dogs live on the property. Lake Malawi is nearby, and town amenities such as shops, markets, and museums are easily accessible.

Volunteers receive three meals a day prepared by the family, including local dishes such as nsima, rice, vegetables, beans, meat or fish, and breakfast items like tea, coffee, or porridge. Dietary needs can be accommodated with prior notice, and snacks or bottled water are available locally. Airport pickup and travel guidance are also provided.

Breakfast, lunch and supper is provided.

Karonga is located near the northern shores of Lake Malawi, offering swimming, kayaking, and lake cruises during free time. Volunteers can visit the local museum featuring prehistoric human finds, dinosaur fossils, and Malawian history and culture.

You can also explore Livingstonia and hike the Nyika Plateau, or visit nearby mining areas. Weekend trips to Nkhata Bay allow for scuba diving, while Vwaza Wildlife Reserve offers wildlife viewing and bushwalks.

In Karonga, volunteers can experience village life, music, dance, and traditional cooking. Additional travel and activities are self-arranged and self-funded. Free time can be used for relaxing, reading, swimming, or gym activities.
