About Us
Kenya Voluntary Development Association (KVDA) is an indigenous, non-political, non-sectarian, and non-profit organization established in 1962 as a workcamp organization and registered as an NGO in 1993. For over six decades, KVDA has promoted voluntarism and community-led development, working with local communities and international partners to improve quality of life and create sustainable change.
KVDA provides opportunities through workcamps, international and long-term volunteer placements, educational tours, community empowerment, enterprise development training, Kiswahili language teaching, intercultural education, and Erasmus+ programmes. Our work is guided by transparency, accountability, community ownership, experiential learning, continuous research, and regular project follow-up. We aim to create opportunities for young people, mobilize communities, raise awareness of development issues, promote global peace and friendship, and support grassroots development. With a 62-year history of developing against dependence, KVDA continues to build trust, cultural understanding, and lasting friendships with volunteers, communities, and partner organizations around the world.

KVDA works to improve the quality of life of communities by mobilizing resources and supporting community-led development initiatives.
Our work is guided by voluntarism, transparency and accountability, community ownership, participatory project evaluation, continuous research and development, regular project follow-up, and experiential learning. KVDA provides voluntary service opportunities to people of all ages while supporting community action, development education, cultural exchange, and grassroots initiatives.
Our vision is to build an organization with a strong membership working toward improved quality of life for communities, while our mission is to mobilize resources to support community development initiatives.
Requirements
- Volunteers must abide by the laws and regulations of the Government of Kenya
- There are no other specific restrictions for participation
Volunteer experience
- Monday to Friday: Volunteers work approximately 6 hours per day
- Weekends: Free time for volunteers to relax, visit local communities, explore the area, and take part in excursions
EUR 300 for stays ranging from 1 week to 1 month.
Volunteers stay with a host family in a house provided by members of the local community, offering an opportunity to experience everyday Kenyan life and connect closely with the local community.
- Three meals provided daily
- Vegetarian and vegan options are available
- Group excursions may be organized during the workcamp, particularly on weekends, but these are optional and at the volunteer’s own expense
- Excursions should be arranged in consultation with community leaders, with support from the KVDA project facilitator
- Volunteers are not expected to pay for other participants who cannot afford excursions. This should be handled sensitively to maintain harmony and good relationships among all volunteers
- Volunteers may have opportunities to explore Kenya’s natural and cultural attractions, including Maasai Mara Game Reserve, famous for the annual wildebeest migration between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara
- Other attractions may include Shimba Hills National Reserve and other local sites, depending on the project location and available excursions.
