About Us
Adjah Cancer Support Ghana (ACSG) offers the Literacy & Reading Support Volunteer Program to help children improve their reading skills, language development, comprehension, and confidence. Through partnerships with local schools in Ghana, volunteers support teachers in creating enjoyable and engaging learning experiences that encourage children to develop a love for reading.
Volunteers assist with reading sessions, storytelling, pronunciation practice, vocabulary building, reading games, and age-appropriate educational activities. They may also help children practise reading aloud, understand simple texts, and develop their communication skills under the guidance of local teachers.
This program welcomes international volunteers who are passionate about education, enjoy working with children, and want to make a positive contribution to local communities. Previous teaching experience is helpful but not compulsory. Volunteers should be patient, responsible, enthusiastic, and willing to adapt to the school's learning environment.
Through this placement, volunteers gain insight into Ghanaian education and culture while sharing their knowledge, time, and skills with local students. The program promotes meaningful cultural exchange, community participation, and responsible volunteering.
All activities are conducted in collaboration with school staff and in accordance with school rules and child safeguarding policies. Join us in encouraging young learners to discover the joy of reading and build a stronger foundation for their future education.

Volunteer experience
A typical day begins with breakfast before volunteers travel to the partner school. Upon arrival, volunteers meet local teachers and review the day's reading activities. They assist children with reading aloud, storytelling, pronunciation, vocabulary building, and reading comprehension. Volunteers may work with individuals or small groups, organize educational games, and encourage children to develop confidence and enjoy reading. All activities take place under the guidance of school staff.
After a break, volunteers may help organize books, prepare reading materials, or support additional literacy activities. At the end of the school day, volunteers return to their accommodation, enjoy free time, or explore local culture. Daily schedules vary depending on the school's timetable, students' learning needs, and planned activities.
€350 per week
Volunteers stay in safe and comfortable accommodation in Ghana throughout their placement. Depending on availability, accommodation may be in a private or shared room with access to basic facilities, including a bed, bathroom, electricity, and water. Common areas may be shared with other volunteers or members of the host household.
The accommodation offers an opportunity to experience Ghanaian culture and everyday community life. Three meals per day are provided during the stay. Volunteers are expected to keep their rooms and shared spaces clean, respect house rules, and be considerate of other residents. Accommodation arrangements and facilities will be communicated before arrival.
3 meals per day
During their free time, volunteers can explore local communities, visit cultural and historical sites, discover Ghanaian cuisine, browse local markets, enjoy traditional music and dance, participate in sports, and meet other volunteers. Weekends may offer opportunities to visit beaches, explore nearby attractions, and experience local festivals when available.
Volunteers can also interact with local residents to learn about Ghanaian customs, traditions, and everyday life. These experiences provide opportunities to relax, make new friends, and enjoy cultural exchange outside the school environment. All activities are optional and subject to availability and local arrangements. Volunteers are responsible for any associated transportation, entrance fees, tours, and personal expenses.
