Gap Year Nepal is a locally operated volunteer and cultural exchange organization dedicated to creating meaningful, responsible, and immersive experiences for international travelers. Our programs combine community service, cultural immersion, adventure, and personal development, allowing participants to make genuine contributions while discovering the beauty and traditions of Nepal. We work closely with local schools, communities, and partner organizations to ensure every volunteer experience is impactful and mutually beneficial.
Our Teaching Volunteering Program gives participants the opportunity to assist local teachers, introduce basic English through interactive activities, and support children's learning in a fun and engaging environment. Rather than replacing local educators, volunteers work alongside them to help create positive classroom experiences through games, arts, sports, and creative learning activities.
Beyond volunteering, participants experience authentic Nepali life by staying with local hosts, enjoying traditional meals, exploring cultural landmarks, and engaging with community traditions. Requirements
Participants should have a positive attitude, be open-minded, adaptable, and willing to engage respectfully with local communities. No previous teaching experience or educational qualifications are required, as guidance and orientation are provided before placement.
Volunteers should have a basic command of English, enjoy working with children, and be prepared to participate in classroom activities, cultural exchange, and community life. A valid passport, appropriate Nepal visa, travel and medical insurance, and compliance with local laws and cultural customs are required.
Volunteers should also be physically able to participate in daily activities and willing to learn about Nepali culture with respect and enthusiasm.
Volunteer experience
A typical day begins with breakfast before traveling to the local school. Volunteers assist teachers with English lessons, lead interactive activities, and support children through games, arts and crafts, reading, and sports while helping create an engaging learning environment.
After a lunch break, volunteers participate in additional classroom sessions or educational activities. Following the school day, volunteers return to their accommodation to relax or take part in cultural experiences such as visiting local markets, learning Nepali traditions, or interacting with community members.
Evenings are free to prepare lessons, reflect on the day's experiences, enjoy dinner, and spend time with fellow volunteers before the next day's activities.
US $200 Per Week
Volunteers stay in clean, comfortable volunteer houses or carefully selected homestays located close to the project site. Rooms are generally shared with other international volunteers of the same gender, while private rooms may be available upon request at an additional cost.
Accommodation includes basic furnishings, shared bathroom facilities, Wi-Fi (where available), electricity, and a safe, welcoming environment. Staying with local hosts or alongside other volunteers provides an excellent opportunity to experience authentic Nepali hospitality, culture, and daily life.
2 Meals a day, Breakfast & Dinner
During their free time, volunteers can explore nearby temples, monasteries, and local markets, enjoy traditional Nepali cuisine, participate in yoga or meditation, take short hikes, visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or relax in local cafés.
On weekends, many volunteers choose to travel to destinations such as Pokhara, Chitwan National Park, Bhaktapur, Nagarkot, or the Himalayan foothills. Cultural festivals, village walks, cooking classes, and interactions with local families provide additional opportunities to experience Nepal beyond the volunteer project.
