In Njeru Municipality, Uganda, access to affordable and quality healthcare can still be a challenge for vulnerable families. This is where St. Dominic Health Care Services (SDHCS) works every day to make a difference.
Founded in 2012 and registered as a Community-Based Organization in 2014, SDHCS was established to support underserved communities and improve access to essential healthcare. Our work focuses on maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS prevention and support, family planning, sexual and reproductive health, immunization, nutrition, community health education, outreach, and support for vulnerable children, young people and older people.
Our work is not limited to the health facility. We also reach people in their communities through health education and outreach activities. We believe that prevention, education and community participation are essential for building healthier families.
Why Volunteers Matter
Volunteers bring something very valuable: their time, skills, ideas and willingness to learn.
At SDHCS, volunteers can work alongside our staff and community members and participate in activities that match their skills and interests. Depending on their background, they may support community health education, outreach activities, children’s and youth activities, elderly support, administration, communications, fundraising and other appropriate community-development activities.
For volunteers with professional health qualifications, opportunities can be discussed according to their qualifications, experience, supervision and applicable Ugandan requirements. We do not expect volunteers to replace local staff. Instead, we believe in learning from one another and working together.
More Than Volunteering
A volunteer experience at SDHCS is also an opportunity for cultural exchange.
Volunteers can experience everyday life in a Ugandan community, learn about local traditions and food, meet community members and gain a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by grassroots organizations.
We want volunteers to feel welcomed as part of our team—not simply as visitors. In return, we hope they will share their knowledge, skills and ideas with us.
Simple Community-Based Experience
SDHCS provides simple, community-based accommodation and three meals per day for US$20 per volunteer per day. We can accommodate 1–5 volunteers at a time, depending on availability and the length of their placement.
Volunteer placements can range from one week to three months, allowing people with different schedules to participate.
