Carnivore Population Dynamics and Conflict Mitigation

🏢 Hosted by United Tansania e. V. · 👤 Min age 16 (with parental consent)

About Us

United Tansania e.V. is a German NGO, registered in 2021 and based in Tanzania. We study both hyena species: the striped hyena, classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN, and the spotted hyena, which is threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and human-wildlife conflict.

To understand the drivers of sustainable carnivore survival outside protected areas, we work on mitigation solutions with communities that experience hyena conflicts. Due to their negative reputation and responsibility for livestock losses, hyenas are subject to high levels of persecution, including the use of snares.

Our team, led by a veterinarian and supported by local trackers and camp staff, is committed to empowering local communities and conducting research on spotted and striped hyenas. Our long-term goals include developing effective strategies for carnivore conservation and improving animal health.

Why choose us?

We offer a hands-on opportunity to join frontline research and community-based conservation in the Lake Eyasi region of Tanzania.

You will help reduce human–hyena conflict through fieldwork and community engagement. Tasks include camera trapping, photo-ID, and den surveys to study hyena movement and behaviour near villages. You will also support efforts to improve coexistence between people and wildlife.

The project focuses on both spotted and striped hyenas, giving insight into their ecology and the challenges they face in human-dominated areas.

Fieldwork takes place in the bush and may include long days outdoors and stays at a research camp in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area region.

As a German NGO working with local communities, we also support education and empowerment initiatives.

You will gain practical experience in wildlife tracking, monitoring, data collection, and human–wildlife conflict research.
