Marine Biology Training Programme

Sharklife is a South African non-profit marine conservation organisation established in 2005, dedicated to protecting and understanding marine environments through research, education, conservation initiatives, and hands-on field training.

Based at our marine field station in Sodwana Bay within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Sharklife operates in one of South Africa’s most biodiverse marine environments. We work alongside researchers, conservation partners, and local management teams to collect valuable data, develop practical conservation strategies, and inspire the next generation of marine scientists and conservationists.

Our programmes give participants hands-on opportunities to develop practical marine biology and conservation skills while contributing directly to meaningful research and conservation efforts. At the heart of our work is a commitment to fostering empathy for marine life, addressing the disconnect between people and the ocean, and creating positive, lasting change through science, education, and action.

- Genuine interest in marine biology, conservation, ecology, or the ocean

- Willingness to learn through practical, hands-on field experience

- No previous marine science experience or scuba certification required; training can be provided

- Responsible, motivated, adaptable, and able to work independently and as part of a team

- Comfortable participating in snorkelling, freediving, scuba diving, boat activities, fieldwork, and early starts

- Good observation skills, attention to detail, and an interest in science

- Willingness to learn species identification, ecological surveys, data collection, and monitoring techniques

- Comfortable with communal living and life at a working marine field station

- Strong teamwork, respect, initiative, and a positive attitude

- Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures

- No previous marine biology or research experience is required; Sharklife provides practical training in marine science and conservation

- Genuine interest in marine life, enthusiasm, willingness to learn, and ability to work well in a team

- Physically fit and comfortable participating in ocean-based activities

- Medically fit to participate in diving activities

- Previous scuba certification is not required; diving qualifications can be completed through the programme

- Good level of English required to understand training, instructions, and safety procedures

- International participants must have a valid passport and the appropriate permission to enter South Africa

- Suitable travel, medical, and diving insurance is required

- Thesis students must be enrolled at a university, have an academic supervisor, and receive prior approval for their research proposal
