About Us
Open Arms Community Project, trading as Open Arms Foundation, is a registered nonprofit based in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We support young people, women and girls, children, and persons with disabilities through education, health awareness, practical skills, and community programmes.
Our Farm the Future 2030 programme operates with GEDA Gardens near Empangeni. It introduces young people to agriculture through learning and practical activities involving crops, livestock, and related livelihood skills. Volunteers may help with supervised farm activities, learning sessions, community outreach, and programme support, according to their skills and the opportunities available during their stay.
We aim to give young people useful experience and a clearer path towards work or self-employment while building a welcoming, inclusive community.

Why choose us?
Volunteer with a community organisation that connects practical agriculture with youth development. At Farm the Future 2030, your contribution can support hands-on learning at GEDA Gardens and activities that help young people build confidence and skills. We welcome volunteers with different backgrounds and agree on suitable tasks before a placement begins. You will work alongside local people and learn about the community and its approach to agriculture.
Requirements
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, willing to follow staff guidance and farm safety instructions, and respectful of local communities and people with disabilities. Tasks will be agreed according to each volunteer’s skills and the programme’s needs. Anyone working with children must follow our child safeguarding policy and any screening requirements we specify before placement. International volunteers are responsible for confirming that they have the correct travel documents and permission for their planned activities in South Africa.
Volunteer experience
A volunteer day begins with a briefing and agreed tasks at GEDA Gardens. Depending on the farm schedule and your skills, you may assist with supervised crop or livestock activities, preparation of learning materials, youth training sessions, or community programme administration. The team will explain each task and relevant safety procedures. Activities vary by season, weather, and programme needs.
