How Volunteers Are Helping Remove Plastic Waste from the Himalayas (PSD-Nepal)

High in the Himalayas, where snow-capped peaks attract thousands of trekkers every year, another reality exists alongside the breathtaking scenery—plastic waste. Discarded bottles, food packaging, and other single-use plastics have increasingly become a threat to one of Nepal’s most beautiful and environmentally sensitive regions.

At Partnership for Sustainable Development (PSD Nepal), we believe that protecting the Himalayas requires the collective efforts of local communities, government agencies, visitors, and volunteers from around the world. Through our Himalayan Plastic Removal Project in Langtang National Park, volunteers play a meaningful role in reducing plastic pollution while promoting sustainable waste management practices.

Working alongside local residents, volunteers help collect, sort, and prepare recyclable plastics from trekking routes and surrounding communities. Plastics are transported to our recycling center, where recyclable materials are processed and bottle caps are transformed into useful products through our recycling and upcycling initiative. These products not only reduce waste but also demonstrate how a circular economy can create environmental and economic benefits for mountain communities.

Beyond environmental conservation, volunteers gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Himalayan communities, learn about Nepal’s rich culture and traditions, and experience the satisfaction of contributing to a project with lasting environmental impact.

Since its establishment, PSD Nepal has welcomed more than 2,200 volunteers from around the world. Together with our local partners and communities, volunteers have supported education, environmental conservation, climate action, healthcare, research, and sustainable development initiatives across Nepal.
