Join BYOMSO Foundation Uganda in Supporting Teenage Mothers Through Education and Ending Hunger (BYOMSO Foundation)

July 31, 2026 • @dmin

Every community has the power to create positive change when people come together with compassion and purpose. In eastern Uganda, the Busoga Young Mothers Support Foundation (BYOMSO Foundation) is doing exactly that. Based in Jinja City, this nonprofit organization is dedicated to supporting teenage mothers, their children, and other vulnerable members of the community by improving access to education, healthcare, food security, and livelihood opportunities.

Founded in 2023, BYOMSO Foundation was established in response to the growing challenges faced by young mothers in the Busoga sub-region. Through community outreach, education, and empowerment programs, the organization is working to create brighter futures for young families while helping break the cycle of poverty.

For volunteers seeking a meaningful and rewarding experience in Uganda, BYOMSO Foundation offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of people who need support the most.

Understanding the Challenge

Teenage pregnancy remains one of the most significant social challenges affecting many communities in Uganda. In the Busoga region, the situation became even more difficult during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, when many girls were forced to leave school and faced increased social and economic hardships.

BYOMSO Foundation has identified several factors contributing to early pregnancies and school dropouts, including:

  • Poverty and financial hardship
  • Domestic violence
  • Loss of parents
  • Child neglect and mistreatment
  • Sexual violence and exploitation
  • Limited access to education and reproductive health information

For many young mothers, becoming pregnant at an early age often means the end of their education. Many face rejection from their families, financial insecurity, emotional trauma, and limited opportunities for employment. Without adequate support, both mothers and their children face significant challenges that can continue for generations.

Recognizing these realities, BYOMSO Foundation was created to provide practical support while empowering young mothers to rebuild their lives with confidence and dignity.

A Holistic Approach to Community Development

Rather than focusing on a single issue, BYOMSO Foundation believes that lasting change requires addressing multiple aspects of people’s lives simultaneously.

The organization works through four main pillars that together provide comprehensive support for young mothers and vulnerable community members.

1. Improving Health and Medical Care

Healthy mothers create healthy families.

BYOMSO Foundation promotes maternal and child health by encouraging expectant mothers to attend antenatal care, receive immunizations, and access HIV testing and family planning services after childbirth.

The organization also aims to provide essential items such as:

  • Mother care kits
  • Mosquito nets
  • Personal hygiene supplies
  • Health education
  • Counseling and emotional support

In addition, BYOMSO Foundation raises awareness among schoolgirls about menstrual hygiene and reproductive health while distributing reusable sanitary pads to help girls stay in school and reduce barriers to education.

2. Expanding Access to Quality Education

Education remains one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of poverty.

BYOMSO Foundation believes every child deserves the opportunity to learn regardless of their background or family circumstances.

The organization works toward improving educational opportunities by supporting:

  • Children of teenage mothers
  • Orphans
  • Children with disabilities
  • Other vulnerable children within the community

Its long-term vision includes establishing schools that provide safe, inclusive learning environments while offering school supplies, uniforms, meals, and educational scholarships to children in need.

By investing in education today, BYOMSO Foundation is helping prepare future generations for brighter opportunities.

3. Strengthening Food Security

Food insecurity continues to affect many vulnerable households in the region.

To improve nutrition and reduce hunger, BYOMSO Foundation supports families through food assistance while promoting sustainable agriculture.

The organization encourages community members to develop household gardens and learn modern farming techniques that improve food production and generate additional income.

These initiatives help families become more self-reliant while improving nutrition for both mothers and children.

4. Empowering Through Skills Training

Economic independence is essential for long-term sustainability.

BYOMSO Foundation aims to establish a vocational training center where young mothers, widows, single mothers, and other vulnerable community members can learn practical skills that increase employment opportunities and financial independence.

Future training programs include:

  • Tailoring
  • Hairdressing
  • Computer skills
  • Soap making
  • Shampoo production
  • Bookbinding
  • Reusable sanitary pad production

These skills enable participants to start small businesses, earn sustainable incomes, and provide better futures for their families.

How Volunteers Can Make a Difference

Volunteers play an important role in supporting BYOMSO Foundation’s mission.

If you are passionate about education, community development, youth empowerment, or social impact, your knowledge and enthusiasm can make a meaningful contribution.

Volunteer opportunities primarily focus on:

Community outreach volunteers work alongside local staff to raise awareness, participate in educational campaigns, engage with families, assist with community events, and help strengthen programs that support teenage mothers and vulnerable households.
