About Us
The Hout Bay Children's Programmes support disadvantaged children through early childhood education, after-school care, and holistic development in one of Cape Town's underserved communities.
The Educare Centre, established in 1999, provides childcare, nutritious meals, and preschool education for 300 children aged 1–6, preparing them for formal schooling in a safe and nurturing environment.
The Primary After-School Programme supports 108 vulnerable children aged 6–13, offering homework assistance, literacy and numeracy support, life skills, counselling, arts, sports, and other enrichment activities in a safe space.
Opened in 2024, the Learning Hub provides after-school care for 60 children aged 6–13, focusing on homework support, creative learning, outdoor play, themed educational activities, and mindfulness to encourage confidence, curiosity, and personal growth.
The programme is supported by Good Hope Volunteers, a volunteer organisation founded in 2009 that connects international volunteers with trusted community and conservation projects across South Africa. Working alongside local nonprofit organisations, Good Hope Volunteers provides meaningful volunteering experiences that create lasting benefits for both volunteers and the communities they serve, while promoting inclusivity, transparency, sustainable development, environmental conservation, and positive social change.

Requirements
- Arrive on Sunday and depart on Saturday
- Intermediate English level (B1/B1+) required
- Full-time programme: Female volunteers only
- Afternoon programme: Open to both female and male volunteers
- Genuine interest in working with children
- Patient, flexible, enthusiastic, and emotionally mature
- Childcare or teaching experience is an advantage
- Skills or interest in dance, arts, and crafts are recommended

Volunteer experience
Volunteers assist teachers and coordinators with daily activities, helping create a fun, supportive, and engaging environment for the children.
Schedule:
- Educare Centre: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
- Primary After-School Programme: Monday–Thursday, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM; Friday, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
- Learning Hub: Monday–Thursday, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM; Friday, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Morning activities include games, singing, dancing, storytelling, and creative play. Afternoons focus on homework support, reading, arts and crafts, sports, and life skills activities.
Every day is different, and volunteers are encouraged to share their ideas, skills, and creativity while working alongside local teachers to support the children's learning, confidence, and well-being.
From €1,439 for 4 weeks
Volunteers stay at our Volunteer House in the safe, upmarket suburb of Newlands, Cape Town. Accommodation is in shared twin rooms, with the option to upgrade to a private room upon request.
Facilities include:
- Shared bathrooms
- Fully equipped communal kitchen
- Dining room and lounge with TV/DVD
- Garden with a swimming pool
- Free Wi-Fi
- Private safe for valuables
Bedding is provided, while towels are not. Bedrooms are cleaned weekly, and a washing machine is available for use with laundry tokens.
This is a self-catering programme. Volunteers have access to a fully equipped communal kitchen to prepare their own meals. Supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, and other local amenities are all within walking distance of the Volunteer House.
