About Us
The Livingseas Coral Restoration Site is the largest project of its kind in Bali, covering more than 9,000 m² and comprising over 9,200 reef structures. Led by the Livingseas Foundation and managed by Livingseas Asia, the initiative aims to restore 5 hectares (50,000 m²) of coral reef habitat stretching from Padangbai to Amuk Bay.
Coral reef restoration is at the heart of our mission. Since 2019, Livingseas has been leading one of Indonesia's largest coral restoration initiatives off the coast of Padangbai, a traditional fishing village in northeastern Bali. This ambitious project continues to expand, making a significant contribution to marine conservation while helping restore vital reef ecosystems.
Livingseas has earned international recognition for its work, including the prestigious Blue Water Heroes Award presented by Dr. Sylvia Earle. Our founder, Leon, has also delivered a TEDx talk in Singapore and has been featured by the Coral Restoration Consortium (CRC) for his contributions to coral restoration and marine conservation.
Beyond reef restoration, Livingseas is committed to inspiring and training the next generation of marine scientists, conservationists, and ocean advocates. Through our Restoration & Research Internships, marine conservation placements, ecotourism internships, and volunteer programmes, participants gain practical, hands-on experience in reef restoration, scientific research, and environmental conservation while developing the skills needed to help protect marine ecosystems around the world.

Requirements
General Volunteers:
- No previous experience in reef restoration or marine conservation is required
- Open to anyone with an interest in the ocean and marine life
- Volunteers who are not yet certified divers can complete SSI scuba training with Livingseas before or during their stay
- Basic swimming ability is helpful, but swimming lessons can also be provided
Restoration & Research Internship Applicants:
- Be studying or have completed a degree in Marine Science, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Have basic knowledge of Indo-Pacific reef fish and coral families (preferred)
- Hold an SSI/PADI Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent). This can be completed with Livingseas for an additional fee and extra time if required
- Bring a personal laptop
Volunteer experience
There is no typical day at Livingseas—every day is different. Activities vary depending on your programme, interests, project priorities, weather conditions, and the needs of the conservation team. Tasks may include diving, coral restoration, scientific monitoring, communication, environmental awareness, or community outreach.
Most days begin between 8:00 and 8:30 am, whether heading out by boat, planting corals, working in the land-based workshop, diving, or preparing for community and conservation activities.
Programme fees vary depending on the programme selected:
- Restoration & Research Internship (4 weeks): IDR 25,000,000
- Coral Restoration Internship (2 weeks): From IDR 4,000,000
- Volunteer Programme: IDR 500,000 per diving day
Please note: The Coral Restoration Internship fee depends on the length of your stay and the number of diving days. The price above is based on 8 diving days during a 2-week internship.
Accommodation is not included in the programme fee. All volunteers and interns are required to arrange accommodation in Padangbai. Livingseas can assist participants in finding suitable accommodation based on their budget.
Example monthly accommodation options include:

- Topi Inn: Approximately IDR 4.5 million/month
- Tirta Yoga Inn: Approximately IDR 5.6 million/month
- Dharma Homestay: From IDR 7.5 million/month
- Suites: Approximately IDR 10.5 million/month
Lunch is provided by Livingseas on scheduled diving days. For all other meals, participants are responsible for arranging and covering the cost of their own food.
Outside your programme, you'll have plenty of opportunities to explore the beauty of Bali. Popular activities include:
- Visiting rice terraces, waterfalls, and beaches
- Hiking Mount Batur at sunrise
- White-water rafting and cycling tours
- Snorkelling and fun diving
- Exploring local villages, temples, and markets
- Relaxing by the beach and experiencing Balinese culture
